Axe Library now offers Document Delivery

The Axe Library will now offer a Document Delivery service to the PSU community using the Interlibrary Loan "ILLiad" system. This system will allow patrons to request journal articles owned by the Axe Library in paper or microform formats, and have them delivered to their desktop online. What Is Document Delivery?

The ILLiad Document Delivery Service (DDS) is a trial service offering you the ability to request and receive scanned copies of journal articles owned by the Axe Library in print or microform.


Who Is Eligible To Use ILLiad Document Delivery?

Anyone with an active ILLiad account may use Document Delivery.


What Can I Request Through ILLiad Document Delivery?

With ILLiad/Document Delivery, you may simply request journal articles that you need. If we have it in-house, we will scan and upload the articles to your account. If the Axe Library does not own the item, we will request it from another library using our Interlibrary Loan service.


What Cannot Be Supplied Through ILLiad Document Delivery?

• Axe book titles are not available. Those must be checked out in person at the Circulation Desk.
• Journal articles already available for you to download, such as our Full Text subscriptions.
• Articles over 50 pages.

How Many Articles Can I Request?

There is currently no limit on the number of articles you may request at one time, however, we may limit the number we process per day during peak times of the semester.


How Do I Place a Request?

Start by using:

• Axe360 to pin down citations in our online databases, or try our...
• Databases by Subject page. You could also select...
• An individual database of your choice, or use...
• Citation Linker, if your citation comes from a print source.

Look for “Article Linker” in the article citation. If the item is not available in Full Text format, click on the “Click Here to Request Item on Interlibrary Loan” link. You will be taken to the ILLiad logon page.

If you have used our ILLiad Interlibrary Loan service, you already know what to do. If you do not have an account, you may create one. Community users may contact the Interlibrary Loan department to set up an account.

You may also log in and use the ILLiad “Photocopy” request form, available in the sidebar.


How Soon Will I Get My Articles?

We try to fill or respond to requests within two working days.


How Do I Access My Articles?

They are available in your ILLiad account as soon as they are uploaded. Log in to ILLiad, and select “View Requests > My Articles” in your account sidebar.


How Long Will My Articles Stay Web-posted?

ILLiad articles remain in your account for 21 days after posting. Please check to see that all pages are copied and you can read all of the pages scanned. You may print or save the Adobe Acrobat PDF files.


What If I Have Trouble Accessing My Documents?

Have the latest version of Adobe Reader installed on your computer. Some files may be quite large, and take time to load. If you can view the PDF version of this document, you should be ready to go.

PubMed and Article Linker

The PubMed database is a fabulous open access resource for locating research and review articles in the areas of medicine, pharmacy, life sciences, and related areas back to the 1950s. For those of you who search the PubMed database on a regular basis, it is a somewhat difficult and laborious process because you must then search the database and find a citation to an article. Then, you must search to find out if Axe Library has the journal.

As of now, Article Linker is now available while searching PubMed, which will save you a considerable amount of time and energy by being able to know immediately whether Axe Library has the needed item. After doing a PubMed search and retrieving a list of citations, click on the link for the article’s author for an article. By default, you will see the abstract view here. In the upper right corner of the screen, you will see a GUS icon which links you to Article Linker:


Article Linker allows you to find out if Axe Library owns the needed journal in print, microfilm, or electronic format. In the event that the library does not have the needed article, there is a link to the interlibrary loan form. In addition, when you log into the new ILLiad Interlibrary Loan form, the form will be pre-populated with the article’s data from PubMed. Click here for an earlier blog about ILLiad. Because it is an open access resource with no login necessary, there is no need to precede this URL with the proxy string, as is described here under Linking Library Resources to ANGEL.

New Interlibrary Loan system launches in August.

Continuing the Axe Library’s goal to improve Library services, the Axe Interlibrary Loan Department will institute a major change this month. Beginning August 12th, a new Interlibrary Loan system known as ILLiad will be put into place. ILLiad, or “InterLibrary Loan Internet accessible database”, allows Axe patrons to monitor their Interlibrary Loan requests, ask for renewals, and pick up electronically delivered articles. In addition, citations from major databases such as WorldCat or PubMed will automatically populate request forms, saving time for patrons, and providing complete and accurate information to lending libraries. RSS technology, up to the minute request status, and the ability to search active and completed requests is also built into each account.

Accounts, created with the Gus Login ID and GUS PIN, are established when making the initial Interlibrary Loan request. Community patrons have access to Interlibrary Loan by obtaining a PSU Library Card and Axe PIN, after which they may set up an ILLiad account and begin using the service.

With ILLiad the Library will begin a Document Delivery pilot program for PSU faculty, scanning and delivering articles from our collection directly into personal ILLiad accounts, using a companion software package called “Odyssey”.
