Second Annual Children’s Book Festival

Here is a brief reminder that Friends of the Leonard H. Axe Library will hold its Second Annual Children's Book Festival, from 11:30 AM to 4 PM on Saturday, March 31st , 2007 in the East Lobby of the Weede Gymnasium. It will be held in conjunction with the annual Young Authors' Conference. Authors from all over the United States, Australia and England have donated representative samples of their work usually signed and frequently decorated with a small drawing or a note. Some recent new additions are "Just Kidding, Sorry!" And "My Secret Bully", by Trudy Ludwig, which are three handy, self help "bully manuals" for the beleaguered nearly middle schooler, and "Mahjong All Day Long", by Ginnie Lo; illustrated by Beth Lo in which these two Chinese American sisters describe their youth spent learning Mahjong at their older relatives' knees.

Representatives from the Friends will be seated in the East Lobby of the Weede gymnasium, just outside the Lance Arena from 11:30AM to 4PM. No books will be sold prior to 11:30 AM. The books are not only signed but are discounted 25 %.

Family & Consumer Science Research Guide Available

We've recently activated a new Research Guide... this one in Family and Consumer Sciences.

These guides feature Axe resources such as selected Reference titles, our online catalog, relevant databases, and "Serials Solutions" for links to our periodical holdings. In addition, there are links to Associations and Societies in the FCS field, general web sites, and when available, hand-picked web sites related to particular classes taught in the department.

Also included in this Research Guide are links in the areas of "Individual and Family Management" and "Human Ecology".

Soon to come is our Research Guide in Fashion Merchandising.

Axe Library Consortium Growing-Adding Thirteen New Members

For many years Axe Library has been a part of a local library consortium that included the school district libraries, Pittsburg Public Library and Fort Scott Community Library. This has allowed users at any of these sites to be able to search the holdings of any of the member libraries.

With the advent of a new library system, Horizon 8.0, the consortium has attracted other Southeast Kansas libraries who either do not have automated systems or who want to migrate to the new system. A total of 13 Southeast Kansas libraries have asked to join the consortium. So far, Iola Public, Eureka Public, Coffeyville Public, and the Southeast Kansas Library System have had their local holdings added to the shared catalog server. Other libraries will be coming on the system one or two at a time over a period of time.

Consortium members and their users will share a web based catalog, accessible by any computer, at home or in the library. Axe Library is pleased to have these new members joining the consortium to bring better use of library materials to Southeast Kansas citizens.

Friends of Axe Library Receives Award from Friends of Kansas Libraries.

Friends of Axe Library will receive an award from Friends of Kansas Libraries (FOKL) as the outstanding Friends Group in a Kansas Community of from 5,001 to 10,000 patrons. The award will be given out on Wednesday, April 11, at the Trustee-Friends Library Celebration Luncheon at the 2007 Tri-Conference in Topeka KS ( held every year by the Kansas Library Association, Kansas Association of School Librarians, and the Kansas Association for Educational Communications and Technology). This is the second award given to the Friends of Axe by FOKL. The first was a 2004 Challenge Grant designed to boost the Friends' membership. The 2007 award is in recognition of our achievements in 2006, which consisted of two grants for the enhancement of the Library film collection, one from the Price R. and Flora A. Reid Foundation and the other from the Goldberg Family Foundation, the development of two new fundraisers, the annual Children's Book Festival and the Community Bazaar book sale, the hosting of famed novelist Don Coldsmith for the 9th annual Gene DeGruson lecture (one of our best attended ever) and the revision of the new edition of our campus history A Closer Look.

On the day of the award ceremony, Ms. Jo Anne Beezley, Government Documents Librarian and member of the Friends since 1988 will go to the Celebration Luncheon (room to be announced) and receive a certificate as well as a check for $100.00.
